What a Move to Waldorf Has To Offer
Located just 23 miles south of Washington, D.C., Waldorf was settled before 1900. It was primarily a rural crossroads with a train station and was called “Beantown” after a local family. Today, Waldorf is a bedroom community for residents who work in Washington, D.C., or at the Andrews Air Force Base. Over time, many housing developments have sprung up in the area to accommodate the growing population. In addition to residential areas, shopping areas have been built to provide the services families need. St. Charles Towne Center draws shoppers and diners from several Maryland counties as well as Virginia because of its selection of stores and easy access to main highway systems.
Because of the huge influx of people, many of them immigrants, Waldorf has developed into an area with a wide array of restaurants offering Persian, Italian, Thai and other ethnic food. There is also a large number of new schools to handle the increase in the number of school-age children entering the area.
Tobacco was previously the primary crop of this region, but it has been replaced by corn, soy and other vegetables. This city has played a major role in America’s history. John Wilkes Booth once sought medical attention from Dr. Samuel Mudd, who was living in nearby Clinton, Maryland. Dr. Mudd’s home has been restored and turned into a museum.
For those looking for outdoor activities, the Capital Clubhouse offers an ice rink, skating, rock climbing walls, an indoor sports court and full gym. Instruction in both skating and hockey is available. You’ll also find bowling alleys and a number of golf courses available to test your skills.
