What a Move to Gaithersburg Has to Offer
Farmers settled in what’s now known as Gaithersburg in 1765, naming their community Log Town. Benjamin Gaither married the daughter of one of the first settlers and opened a store. When the railroad came through in the 1850s, the town received its official name of Gaithersburg. Many of the structures and landmarks from those early days remain in the historic portion of the city now known as Olde Town.
Gaithersburg has not remained stuck in its past, however, but has efficiently blended the old with the best of the new. The western portion of the city has incorporated modern technology and a smart growth plan known as “New Urbanism.” Many of the New Urbanism communities have won industry awards, and more are under construction. Gaithersburg is no longer a small farming town. Instead, it’s now a vibrant urban center that’s the fourth-largest city in Maryland.
Located in Montgomery County, Gaithersburg is approximately half an hour’s drive from Washington, D.C., and the Pentagon. It’s generally regarded as a suburb of the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria area. Gaithersburg’s population of more than 64,000 is served by various forms of public transportation, including rail and bus service within the city as well as to nearby urban areas.
Nearly 40 percent of Gaithersburg’s households include children under the age of 18. They receive their education from 19 elementary schools, 7 middle schools and 3 high schools. The city recreation facilities include 25 parks and public areas offering athletic fields, water activities, gym and fitness centers and performance stages. Classes, sports programs and recreational events are available for children and adults. Seneca State Park, which provides a wide range of outdoor activities, is nearby.
