What a Move to Berryville Has to Offer
Berryville is a quaint small town located in Clarke County, one of the northernmost counties in Virginia. It has an interesting back story and old nickname. Berryville was once called "Battle Town" because a man called Daniel Morgan allegedly would fight people at an intersection by hitting them and throwing rocks he had previously stockpiled. The nickname "Battle Town" came about because of this story and because of a somewhat rowdy local tavern. Daniel Morgan later became distinguished in the Revolutionary War and then returned to Berryville.
Today, Berryville is a scenic place to live. It's in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and is roughly 11 miles from the West Virginia border. The population is relatively small; per the 2000 census, the population numbered 2,963. The population is spread over the town's geographic area of 1.8 square miles.
Berryville is mostly Caucasian, but it does have inhabitants of many races. In 2000, there were 84% white residents. The next highest demographic was African American residents, who made up 13% of residents. Hispanic or Latino residents made up just 1%, and other races made up less than 1% of the population.
Median income was somewhat higher than nearby cities and towns. As of 2000, median income for a household was $39,871, and median income for a family was $52,176. Per capita income was $20,337, which is substantially higher than that of nearby cities.
Today, Berryville has many historic structures that evoke memories of its eventful past. Residents and visitors can visit the Holy Cross Abbey Trappist monastery, Soldier's Rest and many other beautiful places.
