What a Move to Leominster Has to Offer
Leominster is a city of roughly 41,000 residents in Worcester County, Massachusetts, that lies on the Nashua River. The city was purchased from the Native Americans who lived in the area in 1711. Leominster was incorporated as a town in 1740, and until the Civil War, it was a stop on the Underground Railroad. Leominster is the birthplace of John Chapman, better known as Johnny Appleseed, and today, a street in the city is named after him. An annual festival in September commemorates him and features a parade, crafts and entertainment.
The arts play a large part in the vitality of Leominster's spirit with theater and musical groups giving performances throughout the seasons. The Leominster Colonial Band, active since the 1930s, gives free concerts in the summer, and their Christmas concert is an annual city tradition. The Central Massachusetts Repertory Theater, formed in 1996, puts on theater works at Congregation Agudat Achim synagogue. The Leominster Art Association holds a three-day exhibition of local art at St. Leo's Church in the city's downtown every spring. In June, the Starburst Festival is held in Doyle Field with concessions, live entertainment and fireworks attracting over 8,000 people every year.
Leominster State Forest is a popular hiking spot in the city, and Crow Hill Pond and Paradise Pond, popular swimming spots, lie within it. Doyle Community Park & Center is a 167-acre conservation space and conference venue, parts of which can be reserved for special events. Golf can be played at Grand View Country Club, Monoosnock Country Club, Oak Hill Country Club and Red Tail Golf Course.
The city is divided into villages, including North Leominster, Rice Hill, Morse Hollow, the Bowery, the Flats, the West Side, the Car Barn and French Hill.
Routes 2 and 12 run through Leominster, and Routes 13 and 117 start or end in the city in addition to Interstate 190.
