What a Move to Harvard Has to Offer

Harvard, Massachusetts, is a town in Worcester County of roughly 6,500 residents. The origins of the town's name point to Harvard College, but the exact derivation is unclear except for the fact that a prominent family in town, the Willards, had connections to the school. The town was incorporated in 1732, and in its time it has been home to several non-traditional and religious communities, including the Shaker sect, which, at one point, had as many as 2,000 acres of land in Harvard and a number of buildings. The heritage these unique communities have left behind is reflected in Harvard’s architecture and small town charm.

This area was also the site of a scenic farm called Fruitlands, where Luisa May Alcott was inspired to write her novel Little Women. Today, this land is home to the Fruitlands Museum, an art museum with a fantastic collection of over 100 landscape paintings by artists of the Hudson River School and many 19th-century vernacular portraits.

Harvard is well known as a town with an emphasis on high academic achievement, and its students consistently rank in the state's top 10 communities for math and English skills. In Harvard, places of recreation include Bare Hill Pond, a 330-acre lake, home to a beach open for swimming, sailing and canoeing in the summer, as well as adjoining trails for hiking and cross-country skiing in the winter. Golf is a popular activity at the Shaker Hills Country Club. Residents value land conservation and preserving the small-town character and feeling of Harvard. Every Fourth of July, the town is host to a unique downtown parade and fireworks show.

Sites of interest in Harvard include the Frederick Fiske and Gretchen Osgood Warren House, a historic home built in 1894, the village of Still River and the Saint Benedict Abbey, a functioning Benedictine monastery formerly affiliated with Harvard University.
