What a Move to Loudon Has to Offer
Loudon is a small town located 35 miles southwest of Knoxville in East Tennessee. It is largely considered a suburb of the Knoxville metropolitan area. With just over 5,700 people and 2,000 households, Loudon is a quaint, quiet town to live and work in, offering easy access to the amenities of a bigger city. Loudon's economy is made up primarily of manufacturing with the large DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products plant located in the city. Other industries and activities that contribute to the area’s economy include construction, agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting.
Because of its location along the Tennessee River, Loudon offers much in the way of outdoor activities. The city has a large Parks and Recreation Department that manages six parks. Two notable locations are the Riverside Park and the Performing Arts Center. Riverside Park lies on the banks of the Tennessee River and offers picnic shelters, fishing piers, boat docks and barbecue facilities. The Tate & Lyle Performing Arts Center has an outdoor amphitheater that seats 7,500 people. In the summer months, a number of free community concerts, plays and other events take place in this park.
Loudon also has a number of important historical sites. It was named originally for Fort Loudon, a British colonial-era fort built in 1756 during the Seven Years War. The fort is a few miles south of the Loudon city center. In addition, the Blair's Ferry Storehouse, located in Loudon, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This historic brick structure was built as a storeroom in the 1830s for the community's growing riverboat trade industry.
