What a Move to Oswego Has to Offer
With a little over 18,000 people at the time of the 2010 U.S. Census, Oswego is a relatively small town in central New York. It’s located north of Syracuse and east of Rochester, and it sits on the shore of Lake Ontario. Dubbed “The Port City of Central New York,” Oswego enjoyed historical prominence as an important port city.
The city is also well known as the site of Fort Oswego, a military base during the French and Indian War. During World War II, the fort was used as a place to temporarily house Jewish refugees. These days, visitors might enjoy looking at this historical site and watching re-enactments of the Battle of Fort Oswego. There is also a “Safe Haven Museum,” highlighting the fort’s importance during WWII.
Though small in size, Oswego is famous for being the location of the State University of New York at Oswego (SUNY Oswego). Since this is a popular SUNY school for New York students, the town is also a bustling college town, and it’s easy to see sports, theater and other events put on by these college students.
Lake Ontario is famous for its “lake effect snow,” and those living in Oswego can expect to receive a lot of snow during the winter months. It’s not uncommon to receive over 300 inches of snow throughout the season. This makes winter sports very popular, and you’ll often find people ice skating, sledding or cross-country skiing during the winter. Ski resorts are not far away.
Every year, the city hosts the popular Harborfest, a festival that includes music, culture, and food. Most events are free, and the festival tends to draw more than 150,000 people to the area.
