What a Move to Morristown Has to Offer
Morristown was founded in 1865, renamed from its original name of New Hanover in 1715. A statue of Thomas Paine marks the early role it played in the Revolutionary War. This New Jersey town lies about 26 miles from New York City and, according to City-Data, has a population of 18,529 residents.
Some of the many historic sites in the city include the Morristown National Historical Park, where General George Washington and his Continental Army survived the coldest recorded winter. Twenty-seven miles of trails wind through the forest where Washington had huts built for the soldiers, and you can see Jockey Hollow, which was used by the army twice. There’s also the Ford Mansion, where Washington stayed. At Historic Speedwell, you can see where the telegraph was invented by Samuel F.B. Morse, and Vail House, which was built before 1841.
The Loantaka Brook Reservation is a 744-acre park that offers biking, jogging, walking, hiking and horseback riding across miles of trails. In the winter, this area is used for cross-country skiing. Lewis Morris Park covers 1,154 acres, and has a lake for fishing, swimming in the summer and ice-skating during the winter. The park also features an exercise circuit, equestrian trails and scenic areas for camping and barbecuing.
For an evening of entertainment, head to the Mayo Performing Arts Center for live performances, musicals and comedy, or tour the building’s second-story art gallery. Among the golf courses nearby are the Morris County Golf Club and Spring Brook Country Club, which has been in use since 1921. Patrons can practice their swing on two 18-hole courses.
