What a Move to Fairhaven Has to Offer
The town of Fairhaven sits southeast of Boston and boasts a rich history. Perched between the diversity of small towns, Mattapoisett and Acushnet, just off Buzzard's Bay, it shares a port with the larger city of New Bedford. Oil magnate and financier Henry Rogers, who grew up in Fairhaven, was one of the wealthiest people in all United States history. He and his company, Standard Oil Trust, built many European-style buildings designed by Charles Brigham between 1885 and 1906. These are included in the historical registry for their architectural significance. Rogers and his family donated the majority of these buildings to the town for public enjoyment. The Millicent Public Library, the Town Hall, and Fairhaven High School – all part of this historical group – are in current use today.
Prior to Rogers' history with the town, the Fort Pierce area to the east was built and its lookout tower was used in World War II. Prior to that, the Fort Pierce area supported revolutionaries in their fight against the British in 1778. The town also has the distinction of their Minutemen fighting the first naval battle of the Revolutionary War aboard the sloop, Success, in 1775.
Fairhaven is both a quaint and luxurious seaside town in which to make your residence. In addition to historical ambiance and sightseeing, there is a state park on West Island. The populated island, home to year-round residents, is connected to the mainland by a paved causeway. The state park is home to both Fort Pierce and a large swimmer's beach. The town boasts over 50 restaurants, several B&Bs, hotels, shopping, historic walking tours, sailing opportunities, marinas, whale-watching tours, fishing, museums, rock-hounding, beach-combing; the list of amenities goes on.
