What a Move to Shady Side Has to Offer
Located on a peninsula, Shady Side is a historically rich community located in Anne Arundel County. It’s barely above sea level and receives an average of about 40 inches of precipitation each year. The summers can be hot, and the winters are generally cool with less than 2 feet of snow.
The town is bordered by the Chesapeake Bay and the West River. Early residents earned their living on the water by fishing, crabbing and harvesting oysters. Over time, water-based recreation became predominant. Shady Side now has several marinas offering a full range of water activities, including sport fishing. There are also facilities for car-top boat launches.
Organizations like the Discovery Village and the Shady Side Rural Heritage Society are active in preserving the fishing heritage of the area. Discovery Village is a working waterfront for local fishermen. Among other activities, it sponsors trips on the Miss Edith, a restored wooden oyster boat. Shady Side is home to the Captain Salem Avery House and the Lula G. Scott Community Center, both of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Avery House, named after the man who built it in 1860, is home of the Tilghman Watermen's Museum.
According to the latest census figures, the total population of Shady Side is just under 6,000. Approximately one-fourth of its residents are less than 18 years old. Numerous parks offer recreational activities for all ages, with baseball fields, multipurpose fields, basketball courts and playgrounds.
Community colleges and a University of Maryland campus are within easy driving distance for those seeking higher education. The United States Naval Academy is situated in nearby Annapolis. A casino and Maryland’s two largest shopping malls are located in Anne Arundel County.
