What a Move to New Milford Has to Offer
New Milford is the largest town in Connecticut, covering nearly 62 square miles. It's located in southern Litchfield County, on the Aspetuck, Still and Housatonic Rivers, 14 miles north of Danbury. New Milford is the home of the Canterbury School, a highly regarded Catholic boarding school, featuring the Jose M. Ferrer Memorial Carillon in its chapel. The 1946 book and later film, "Mr. Blandings builds his Dream House," was inspired by a house that still stands in the Merryall neighborhood.
The town's population is roughly 28,000 people, and it has a history of tobacco cultivation and processing, as well as being known as a summer resort in the late 19th century. Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution signer Roger Sherman lived in New Milford until 1761. His lot is the site of the town's current Town Hall.
Besides Roger Sherman, the town is also known for the Boardman family, which fielded judges, state representatives and one of Connecticut's U.S. Senators in the 19th century, Elijah Boardman, who served in the Revolutionary War. Boardman's Bridge, one of the most distinctive bridges over the Housatonic River, is named after the family and is the longest wrought-iron lenticular truss bridge in Connecticut, listed on the National Register of Historic Sites. Boardman's Bridge is located on Boardman Road, one of the town's main streets.
The Lover's Leap Bridge, which is also a wrought-iron lenticular truss bridge over the Housatonic, lies north of Boardman's Bridge in New Milford and is of a similar, ornate design.
Fashion designer Diane von Fürstenberg, wife of television mogul Barry Diller, was born in New Milford, has a 100-acre farm in the town. Designer Bill Blass is also from New Milford. Other famous people from New Milford include sportscaster Bob Costas, comedian Joan Rivers, singer Eartha Kitt, actor Peter Gallagher and former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. The films "Mr. Deeds" and "The Private Lives of Pippa Lee" were shot there.
