What a Move to Mill Valley Has to Offer
Mill Valley, in Marin County, is a city of roughly 14,000 people located about 14 miles north of San Francisco on the northern and western shore of Richardson Bay. The area was first occupied by the Coast Miwok Indians as long as 6,000 years ago, but this tribe dwindled after successive encroachments by missionaries and Mexican settlers.
Much of Mill Valley is in a natural state with redwood forests, parks, coastal areas and marshlands preserved by a strong natural conservancy movement that is dominant in the local culture. Hiking trails traverse the areas in and around Mill Valley. Animals such as bobcats, coyotes and cougars are still present, and the protection of their habitat is considered vital by local residents. Mount Tamalpais has slopes up the city's northwestern edge, and many of the roads wind and twist through its neighboring hills.
A number of famous people have lived in Mill Valley, including musicians John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Janis Joplin, The Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir, Sammy Hagar, Huey Lewis and Bonnie Raitt. Actors Peter Coyote, Mariel Hemingway, Kathleen Quinlan, Jonah Hill, Dana Carvey and Jill Eikenberry have also lived here. The town’s famous authors include Jack London, Cyra McFadden, Wright Morris and Joyce Maynard. Writer Jack Kerouac lived with Beat poet Gary Snyder in Mill Valley at 370 Montford Ave., and parts of his books "On the Road" and "The Dharma Bums" are set in the city.
In 2005, Money magazine rated Mill Valley 10th on its list of the "100 Best Places to Live in the United States." In 2007, Forbes and MSN listed Mill Valley 73rd on its list of the "Most Expensive Zip Codes in America."
