What a Move to Billerica Has to Offer
A town in Massachusetts' Middlesex County, Billerica was founded in 1655, on the same day as nearby Groton and Chelmsford. It is named after the town of Billericay in Essex, England, which is its sister city.
A number of notable Revolutionary War figures lived in Billerica, including Asa Pollard, the first American soldier to die in the Battle of Bunker Hill, William Manning, who authored "The Key of Liberty," a critique of Federalist policies, and Thomas Ditson, who was tarred and feathered by the British and inspired American soldiers to adopt the tune "Yankee Doodle.” Today, Billerica claims the song as its own, and it sponsored a bill in Congress to recognize Billerica as "America's Yankee Doodle Town."
The Middlesex Canal, once a waterway conveying freight from Lowell to Charlestown, sourced its water from the Concord River in Billerica in the 1800s, but it was dismantled and filled in as rail and highways competed with its trade. Today, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority commuter rail's Lowell Line partially follows the same path as the canal, and the town is also conveniently located on Routes 13, 14, and 3A.
Billerica is the headquarters of companies E Ink, GE Measurement and Control Solutions, a unit of General Electric, Pan Am Railways, American Science & Engineering and defense contractor Raytheon.
For Sports Illustrated magazine's 50th anniversary, the magazine listed Billerica in the nation's top 50 towns for sports and recreation and named it as the "sports town of the Bay State." The Country Club of Billerica offers public golf, and there are spacious nearby driving ranges. For children, the town's Trampoline Park features basketball dunking lanes, a Kid Zone, 3D dodgeball, gymnastics "tumble tracks" and a rock climbing wall.
