What a Move to New Britain Has to Offer
New Britain is a city in Hartford County, Connecticut, of approximately 73,000 people. It was chartered in 1871, having previously been a part of nearby Farmington. New Britain is the home of Charter Oak State College and Central Connecticut State University and is the headquarters of tool manufacturer Stanley Black & Decker. Stanley was founded by Frederick Stanley to make door bolts and other iron hardware. His cousin Henry Stanley founded a tool company in New Britain, and the two companies merged in 1920, then merged again with Black & Decker in 2010.
Inventions from New Britain include the wire coat hanger, the game of racquetball, and the act of dribbling a basketball (the latter two of which were invented at the New Britain YMCA).
New Britain contains the oldest museum of American Art in the U.S., the New Britain Museum of American Art. It also features the New Britain Industrial Museum, dedicated to exhibits of New Britain's industrial present and past, and the New Britain Youth Museum. The city has had a symphony orchestra since 1948.
New Britain has a sizable Polish community, the largest of any city in Connecticut, and it inhabits a section of the downtown area around Broad Street officially designated as "Little Poland." There are three Polish newspapers and a television station.
Parks in New Britain include Walnut Hill Rose Garden and Walnut Hill Park, designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, the designer of New York's Central Park.
The Hospital of Central Connecticut is the city's largest employer, with approximately 3,600 employees. Firearms manufacturer Stag Arms is located in New Britain, as are DATTCO, a major bus leasing company, and Tilcon, a producer of crushed stone and asphalt.
A bus rapid transit line from the city features regular service to Hartford. New Britain is served by Amtrak, with regular service to New Haven and Springfield via its station in adjoining Berlin.
