What a Move to East Hartford Has to Offer
East Hartford is a town of approximately 51,000 residents on the eastern shore of the Connecticut River in Hartford County, Connecticut. The town was founded in 1783, and it lies across the river from Hartford. The town has a diverse demographic and has seen much residential development in recent years.
One of the most well-known and popular areas in East Hartford, Wickham Park is a 250-acre open space park and woodland area connected to the town. Donated by industrialist Clarence Wickham and landowner Myrtle Williams, in 1960 and 1967, respectively, the park contains ponds, picnic areas, an aviary and sports facilities. The park is home to the state's High School Cross Country Championships and the Summer Grand Prix Cross Country Race series. Maintenance and operation of the park continue to be financed by a trust of the estate of Charles Wickham, and the park's offices are housed in what was once his carriage house. A number of rare items from Clarence Wickham’s personal collection lie in the Oriental Gardens section of the park.
Clarence Wickham also donated money for the town's Wickham Memorial Library, which was built in honor of his father, Horace Wickham, a wealthy inventor whose business sold envelopes to the U.S. government. The Wickham Library is one of two libraries in the town, the other being the Raymond Library, which houses two model jet engines built by the town's largest employer, Pratt & Whitney.
Goodwin College, a private nonprofit four-year college, is located in East Hartford. In recent years, the college has worked with the state to redevelop the surrounding lands and neighborhoods around its campus, and it is today a growing presence in the town.
