Quick Guide to Texas
- State Overview:
Brief History: The second largest state in the United States in both land and population, Texas is often famed for its size. It shares its borders with Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and, the country of Mexico. While commonly thought of as primarily desert, Texas is actually only 10% desert. 90% of the state is a tapestry of diverse landscapes, including coastline, swamplands, prairies, grasslands, forests, piney woods, rolling hills, and mountains. In its rich history, Texas as a territory has had six different entities or nations as rulers which is why “six flags over Texas” is a commonly used historical term. The six flags to which it refers are Spain, France, Mexico, Texas as an independent republic, a Union State, and a Confederate State. The name “Texas” is derived from a word in the Caddo tribe’s language meaning, “friend”.

Quick Guide to Austin
Brief Overview:
The city of Austin is both the capital of the state of Texas and the seat of Travis County. The second most populated state capital after Phoenix, Arizona, parts of Austin are also encompassed by Hays County and Williamson County. The fastest growing city in America, Austin is home to an estimated 950,715 people with 3,182 per average square mile. Austin is located in Central Texas and is immersed within the Greater Texas Hill Country. This gives Austin close proximity to numerous famed rivers and lakes including the Colorado River, Lady Bird Lake, Lake Travis, and Lake Walter E. Long. Austin began being settled by pioneers in the 1830s and shortly thereafter was chosen to replace Houston as the then Republic’s capital, then called “Waterloo”. Not long after, “Waterloo” was changed to “Austin” to honor Stephen F. Austin, “The Father of Texas” and Texas’s first Secretary of State. Residents of this great city are dubbed “Austinites” and are well-known for their diverse mix both socio-economically, culturally and professionally. This diversity has bred a funky reputation for the city of Austin, so much so, that the unofficial slogan of Austin is “Keep Austin Weird”.

Quick Guide to San Antonio
Brief Overview:
The oldest municipality in Texas, San Antonio holds major historical significance in the state and is its second most populated city. San Antonio is home to more than 1.5 million residents and is the seventh most populous city in the United States. Originally founded as a Spanish mission and outpost in 1718, San Antonio become a civil settlement by charter in 1731, making it the oldest city in the state of Texas. While historically significant, San Antonio has also made a name for itself within modernity, experiencing major growth in the past three decades. The city holds one of the corners that is known as the “Texas Triangle” as it lies between Central and South Texas. San Antonio is the seat of Bexar county but parts of the city also currently fall in Medina, Garden Ridge and Comal counties. As one of its nicknames suggests, San Antonio is a military city with numerous armed forces facilities in and around the city limits including Fort Sam Houston, Lackland Air force Base, Randolph Air force base, and several others. Given its antiquity, it should come as no surprise that San Antonio is home to major historical sites including two UNESCO heritage sites, the Alamo and San Antonio Missions Historical Park. The growth San Antonio has achieved in recent years has led to it becoming the headquarters to several Fortune 500 companies and the only practicing medical research hospital in South Texas.
