Quick Guide to Tennessee
State Overview:
Brief History:
Located in the southeastern United States, Tennessee shares its borders with many states. Kentucky, Virginia, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Arkansas, Missouri, and North Carolina are all neighbors to Tennessee. The state’s name comes from the Cherokee name of a small Native American village which was called, “Tanasqui”. The Appalachian Mountains make up most of the state’s eastern side and to its west lies the Mississippi River. The history of the state of Tennessee begins with the Watauga Association, an early American pact for the frontier territory that was west of the Appalachians. Originally, what is considered Tennessee today was actually part of North Carolina and subsequently the later-formed Southwest Territory. Tennessee, as a state, was not formally admitted into the Union until 1796. During the Civil War, Tennessee was the last state to join the Confederacy and the first to be readmitted into the Union at the close of the war. Second only to Virginia, Tennessee supplied the greatest amount of soldiers to the Confederate Army. A mostly agrarian economy for most of its history, it wasn’t until the 20th century when Tennessee sought to diversify its industries. This was aided by a major federal push in funding during the 1940s that culminated in the creation of the Manhattan Project’s uranium enrichment facilities within the state.

Quick Guide to Memphis
City Overview:
Memphis is located on the Mississippi River in western Tennessee within the Southwestern portion of Shelby County. The seat of Shelby County, Memphis is the most populous of any city located on the Mississippi River with nearly 700,000 people calling it home. The city’s neighborhoods are distinctive and host a variety of landscapes. Memphis is a famous city for music namely, blues and rock n’ roll and is widely famed for its deep roots in both culture and history. Hernando De Soto was the first European to discover Memphis with his 1541 expedition. Soon after, parts of Memphis’s bluffs would become a source of contention amongst the Spanish, French, and the English as Memphis began its transformation into a city. Future President Andrew Jackson, John Overton, and James Winchester founded the city of Memphis in 1819. Eventually, the city became one of the largest in the Antebellum South as a market for mostly lumber, slaves, and agricultural goods. At the close of the Civil War, the city became the largest market for both cotton and lumber which caused exponential growth for Memphis. During the Civil Rights Movement, Memphis played a crucial historic role with many important events taking place in the city, including the tragic assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Today, Memphis remains a center for entertainment, media, art, education, and commerce. Along with its still vibrant music scene, Memphis has also gained notoriety for its barbeque and hosts the World Championship Barbeque Cooking Contest annually.

Quick Guide to Knoxville
City Overview:
The seat of Knox County, Knoxville is Tennessee’s third most populous city with nearly 200,000 residents. In 1768, Knoxville was established and functioned as the original capital city for the state of Tennessee. Due to its landlocked location, Knoxville experienced difficulties early on from its geographic isolation. Upon the railroad’s arrival in the 1850s, Knoxville began to finally boom, however, the lead up to the Civil War created tension within the city due to residents being divided on secession. Knoxville was occupied by both Union and Confederate forces during the years of the Civil War. After the war, Knoxville rebranded itself as a wholesaling and manufacturing center which led to rapid growth and development. Manufacturing began to struggle in the 1920s which led to its eventual collapse within the city. In 1982, Knoxville hosted the World’s Fair which provided needed economic support to ignite growth once again. Knoxville today is home to the headquarters of several corporations as well as the flagship location of the University of Tennessee.
