State Overview
Brief History: The first region to be visited and settled by Europeans, Florida has a long, storied history. Juan Ponce de León, a Spanish explorer, first made contact in the region in 1513 and subsequently named it Florida meaning “the land of flowers” in Spanish. The French, Spanish and English colonial powers engaged in multiple conflicts over territory within Florida throughout the 15th and 16th centuries. Florida served as the main location for the Seminole Wars against the Native Americans as well as segregation after the American Civil war. Florida gained statehood within the United States in 1845.
