Quick Guide to South Carolina
State Overview:
Brief History: Located in the American southeast, South Carolina shares its borders with North Carolina to its north and Georgia to its south. The Atlantic Ocean lies to the east of South Carolina and is what creates the state’s famed coastline. South Carolina’s population is average as far as US states go and is the 23rd most populous state. The Greenville metropolitan area which includes Anderson and Mauldin accounts for the largest area by population in South Carolina with nearly 900,000 people calling it home. South Carolina’s largest single city however, is Charleston with 134,875 residents. Columbia, South Carolina’s capital is home to 133,114 people. A historic state, South Carolina was the eighth state to ratify the United States Constitution in 1788. Prior to the official start of the Civil War, South Carolina was the first state to vote for secession from the Union in 1860. Upon the Civil War’s end, the state was readmitted to the United States in June of 1868. South Carolina’s name is derived from the Latin for “Charles” due to King Charles I of England first establishing the English colony. South Carolina is home to a picturesque southern charm that is reflected in its beautiful and extensive coastline, lovely gardens, historic sites, and plantations.

Quick Guide to Charleston
City Overview:
Both the largest and the oldest city in South Carolina, Charleston is located on Charleston Harbor, an inlet formed by the Atlantic Ocean and the joining of the Wando, Cooper, and Ashley rivers. The city of Charleston is home to approximately 134,875 residents with the larger metropolitan area having 761,155 people. Founded in 1670 as Charles Town in honor of England’s Charles II, initially, the city was located on Ashley river’s west bank but was moved to its present location in 1680. Within ten years of this move, present-day Charleston became the fifth largest city in colonial North America but remained unincorporated. At the end of the Revolutionary War in 1783, Charleston took on its current spelling and incorporated as a city. Previous to 1788, Charleston was home to the state’s government but as the population grew further east within the state, Columbia became the new capital as it remains today. Charleston is famous for its extensive history, famous dining, warm people, and beautiful architecture. A popular destination for tourists, Charleston has been named “America’s Most Friendly City”, “The Most Polite and Hospitable City in America”, and “The World’s Best City” by major publications.

As the second largest city in the state and South Carolina’s capital, Columbia holds an important governmental and historical significance for its state. Home to approximately 134,309 residents, Columbia is the county seat for Richland County with a section of the city also extending into Lexington County. Columbia is the main city in what is referred to as the “Midlands” area of the state, the name for the towns and cities in central South Carolina. Known as “River City”, Columbia rests at the confluence of the Broad and Saluda Rivers which intersect to form the Congaree River. Columbia is home to the state’s first university and its largest, the University of South Carolina. The largest United States Army installation, Fort Jackson is located in Columbia and serves as a basic combat training center. Famously, Columbia was the location where, in 1860, South Carolina held its Secession Convention where it first withdrew from the Union and sparked the events that led up to the Civil War.
