What a Move to Centreville Has to Offer

Centreville is a census-designated place in Fairfax County, Virginia, about 20 miles west of Washington, D.C. Its population is approximately 71,000 people. There are five other communities in Virginia named Centerville, but Centreville is the only one with its unique spelling.

Established as a town in 1792, the community got its name from the fact that it was centrally-located on the turnpike road close to the towns of Dumfries, Colchester, Alexandria, Georgetown and Leesburg.

Several Civil War battles were fought near Centreville, including the Battle of Chantilly and the First and Second Battles of Manassas. The town served as a supply depot to both sides during the war, and it was the site of the first railroad built exclusively for military use, the Centreville Military Railroad, which was built for the Confederacy but was only used for less than one month.

If you appreciate American history, Centreville has much to offer. The town has a number of historic sites. Two Centreville churches were used as hospitals during the Civil War, both of which were reconstructed after the war. The Stone Church, originally built in 1855, was reconstructed in 1870. The Episcopal Church, built in 1851, was reconstructed in 1867. Other places of note include the Mount Gilead House and Sully Historic Site. Civil War reenactments are educational and fun for people of any age.

Centreville is located on U.S. Route 29, Virginia Route 28 and Interstate 66. It grew most rapidly in the 1990s and 2000s when high technology companies brought a new influx of people to the community. The town has luxury townhouses and a movie theater. Today, Centreville is a residential community and commuter suburb of Washington, D.C. with regular bus service to the city.
